This book! This book birthed something in me, it nourished my soul and fed my mind. It held a mirror up to my childhood and reflected so many emotions back at me and with tears in my eyes I'm telling you that I have been waiting for a story like this. Anything I write here will never be good enough to show this story any kind of justice so I'll just have to type from my heart which may be less articulate but it'll be 100% real.We first meet Marlon (Grip) and Bristol in Kennedy's Soul Series and get just a glimpse of the feelings between the two. In Flow we are blessed with the education of their background and their first time meeting eight years before and I fell so completely hard for them. There's no preamble, they are completely naked to each other in the most intimate way and their connection is devastatingly beautiful.
From the outside Bristol comes off as prickly, hard, and uncaring but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Growing up in such a sterile and cold household has shaped the way she views life. It's better to not love than have ones heart broken, loving too much is reckless, love doesn't conquer all.....so why try?
Grip could easily be one of my brothers, a cousin, a guy I grew up with in the neighborhood. I didn't realize how much I was craving for a character like Grip until my emotional flood gates crashed. He is EVERYTHING. An intellectual, a magnificent poet, a lyricists, strong, funny, loyal, caring, sexy, and unforgettable. He's also completely gone for Bristol, just head over heels.
There are so many obstacles in their way, whether it's insecurities, past and present lovers, society, even family. Their journey broke every single piece of my heart, slowly and absolutely. I'm quite sure Kennedy has caused irrevocable damage to my heart but the scar tissue is so worth it.
This is a DIAMOND star read!!!! It is a mandatory read for life, for awakening, for clarity, for a consciousness to your soul.
Before I go, I just want anyone who reads this to know how this book will forever resonate in this little black girl from South Los Angeles.....daughter to a detective and sister-in-law to a white cop. I am completely ruined, wrecked and shook from every aspect, every syllable, every poem, and every lyric. Kennedy Ryan is so astute, her writing is pure, authentic, brilliant, brave crisp, sharp, substantial and so genuine with absolutely no filter. My standards have risen, Ryan is here to slay and it's a blood bath!

Kennedy Ryan has such a way with words! Her Soul Series kept me on pins in needles, dying to know Kai and Rhyson’s love story. While I was engrossed in their story, I fell in love with the world and people Kennedy created/ Insert the other characters in the story, Grip and Bristol. These two were a brilliant addition to the Soul series but to know that they got their own book was music to my ears. GRIP is what I needed for these two. The push and pull between Grip and Bristol is phenomenal. It is orchestrated like a beautiful musical experience, featuring crescendos and abrupt pauses, all the while taking the reader deep into a brilliantly written story that was so much more than I expected.
This story is all about Grip and Bristol, naturally, but their story is told in a brutally honest way that addresses so many realistic issues and struggles they would face. I think that was not what I expected. I knew it would be an epic love story, one that tears at your heart and makes it whole, but I never expected it to be so culturally relevant to the world we live in. The underlying messages and themes are facts, not passionate preaching. Grip’s life was not always easy and seeing it all first hand, along with Bristol, was eye opening for me. I appreciate the way this book jumps out of the “safe” box to shed light on racial ideas and issues in the world, all the while weaving it into a story in which we learn with the characters and fall in love with their love.
Sometimes two characters make you want to bash their heads together to make them see what you see. You want so badly for it to work but then a startling truth or self-doubt comes along and it all makes sense. The angst in this book is perfect for the story. Bristol struggles with her past and the woman she is today. She feels deeply and fears that her heart is meant to break. That along with Grip’s constant love and attempt to woe makes for a story that is heartfelt and strikingly relatable. Their chemistry is off the charts and it takes them both causing pain to see what they need and open up.
As always, Kennedy’s words are smooth and well played. She shares a story that is relevant, inspiring, and heartwarming. There is heat and passion in this story along with the heartache and pain. I love that you get it all in this book and I never wanted it to end. Yet when it did end, I was so very satisfied.
